Sometimes the larval form of a creature is the one that is the most memorable, and in my opinion, this can be said of the industrious caddisfly larva. They live in their larval form for 1-2 years, collecting small twigs and pebbles which they attach to themselves as both protection and camouflage. They look like moving sticks as they roam around their aquatic stream or pond bottoms, and are a sign of clean water (yay!). This caddisfly larva pin features this star creature making its way across a river-bottom pebble, next to a Petosky stone, speaking of cool things. Did I mention that Petosky stones are fossilized coral found in the Midwest US, which used to be ocean floor?! And that I found this one in (guess where!) Lake Michigan in Petosky, Michigan, while sitting by the lake's edge as the the current brought them in? I polished and set the stone, fabricated the caddisfly larva and then brought them together in a union of eras and Sterling. The pin is 1 3/4" wide by 1 1/4" tall.

Tadpoles are cool. Case closed. And even cooler is that they transform into frogs in stages that are visible to the world...from a pair of little back legs, adding front legs next, tail recedes, et voila! A frog is born! This necklace is a celebration of this process, and really all of life on Planet Earth that has evolved to coexist, survive and thrive. I have carved the tadpole out of melted Sterling silver. It is not cast, and is truly an original one-of (a-kind). S/he (your choice) is soldered onto a whirlpool-like wire frame, and embellished with a watery-blue moonstone. It measures 1" by 1 1/4" and hangs from an 18" Sterling chain. It's a reminder of just how magical our world is.

The Old Man of the Mountain was, and still is an iconic figure in NH. The symbol of the Granite State, and being made of said granite, he oversaw scenic Franconia Notch and the White Mountains until he fell in 2003. He is still celebrated as the quintessential Granite Stater...stoic, silent and profilic (which may not be a real word, but should be...you get the point). These earrings both celebrate him, and suggest where he may have risen to after his great fall...to the moon, of course. I make them out of Sterling silver and lacquered jeweler's brass, and dangle a little mixed metal star at the bottom for fun. They measure 3/4" wide by 1" tall not including their Sterling earring wires. They are a tribute to a great figure and special state.

What summer would be complete without the experience of seeing the flashing lights of lightning bugs on a warm evening? This Lightning Bug Necklace turns this into a year-round experience. I made it out of fine and Sterling silver, enameled it with vitreous (kiln fired glass) enamels, and then added a little magic so that it actually glows just like the real thing (after it is charged by putting it near a bright light for a minute. It hangs (and sometimes flies from) and 18" oxidized Sterling necklace.

Crows or ravens, ravens or crows? The choice as to which remarkable bird these earrings pay tribute to is yours. I am a fan of both, so am not leaning either way. Both birds have a tendency to collect colorful and shiny objects, which is a trait that many of us can respect and relate to, speaking for myself, anyway. I make them out of Sterling, jeweler's brass, a miniature coin (cool, eh?) and a snippet of shiny chain. They are handpainted with enamel paints, and sealed with jeweler's resin. They measure 1 1/4" tall by 1" wide, not including the Sterling earring wires.

And as an aside. they were inspired by the recent find of a raven's skull under a stand of tall white pines where we hear the ravens talking (and they really do talk!). I considered this to be a gift from the world, and the earrings are my response....which doesn't mean that they couldn't be crows, of course.

It is always a thrill to encounter a bird's nest, and even more so when it is cradling eggs. This bird nest necklace is a testament to this. It is hand-fabricated out of Sterling silver and features fresh-water pearls. The focal point measures 1" tall by 2" wide and the total length with the oxidized Sterling chain is 19". It is a sweet necklace that resonates with those who thrive in the great outdoors, those who cherish what it means to be a parent, as well as all the bird-lovers amongst us.

Note re custom nests: I am happy to accommodate special requests re the number of eggs in the nest. It comes with 3 peal eggs, but if more or less are desired, within reason (not sure if 24 eggs would fit...) please let me know in the notes. I will confirm this via email.

Mushrooms symbolize the beauty and magic of nature, and the amanita muscaria is the quintessential mushroom. It is the mushroom that was featured in Alice in Wonderland, and was the subject of European folklore, and often represented in Christmas tree ornaments. These earrings pay homage to these mushrooms, and to the fields and forests where they are found. They are handcrafted from jeweler's brass and Sterling, and carefully hand-painted, and sealed with protective resin. And wait! It gets better! The stems dance lightly beneath the caps, and bits of the decorative elements will glow in the dark after being exposed to bright light for several minutes. The measure a scant 3/4"wide and 1" long without the earring wires. These earrings are light and fun to wear, and make great gifts, too.

Glasswing butterflies are yet another amazing facet of our natural world. Their wings are often clear, with perhaps minimal color, which allows them to blend in with their environment. The butterfly here is the Pink-tipped Clearwing Satyr (Cithaerias pireta). I have come up with a technique that allows me to add translucence to jewelry. This allows me to pay homage to clearwing butterflies. I carefully add small amounts of color to the wings which are then resined twice for durability. I hand fabricate them out of Sterling wire, and they are light and fun to wear. They measure 1" tall by .75" wide, not including the Sterling earring wires.
