Product Description

Cedar, bohemian, cedar, bohemian? These two waxwing species are similar in so many ways, but each has its own characteristics and charm. Cedar waxwings are slightly smaller and have yellow-brown breasts, whereas bohemians have gray breasts. Bohemians have a separate dark spot under their beaks. Both are flocking birds, and both have indistinguishable males and females. So....based on these differences, the lovely bird featured in the necklace here is a (drumroll please!) cedar waxwing! I made it out of Sterling with the bird in brass which I carefully handpaint and seal for durability. It measures 3/4" wide by 1 1/2" tall, and hangs from a quality 18" Sterling chain. It's a tribute to a lovely bird, the cedar waxwing. Stay tuned for a version of its kissing cousin (just an expression, of course) the bohemian waxwing!

And for more info on these fascinating birds, see this article by Meghan McCarthy McPhaul in the wonderful Northern Woodlands Magazine (my favorite, well worth subscribing to): https://northernwoodlands.org/outside_story/article/bohemian-waxwings
