There are many things to get excited about in life. Just ask whirligig beetles! I love how they cluster and play bumper-cars-without-crashes on pond and stream surfaces. This necklace pays homage to the spritely whirligig. It sits on a little silver ponds and, get this, it spins! ....to which it says, well yeah... I carefully etch the subtle patterns that those little silvery flashy beetles sport. The necklace is a tribute to the little whirling dervishes that spin circles in the sun, going nowhere and everywhere fast and seeming to enjoy every second. It measures 3/4" wide x 1" tall and the oxidized Sterling chain is 18'.

The arrowhead plant is a native marsh plant that does, indeed, have leaves shaped like arrowheads that spike out of the water. This chain bracelet is a tribute to a cool plant that is fun to find. It is made out of Sterling. The leaf is in the center of the chain, which is made of links that whirl like water. I have used double jump rings to link these, as they add stability, and look good too. I made a toggle clasp for the bracelet, as it is one that can be linked and unlinked one-handedly.

Anyone who has ever spent much time in a pond (which I highly recommend) has, no doubt, developed an appreciation of lily pads. Between their plate-like floating leaves, and their spectacular flowers, what's not to love? I make them out of Sterling silver, and set a water-droplet-like topaz into each one, and then dangle little gemstone beads from them, for just a little more color...and then there's that fun motion! They measure 1/2" x 1 1/4", or 1 3/4" with their earring wires. They are light and comfortable to wear, and a reminder of those days when you hang with the frogs and turtles.

One is set with a lovely green peridot, one with a blue topaz, and the middle one has a silver carved (not cast!) frog basking in the sun. The links that create the chain are swirls of silver that echo the movement of water. Each link is attached by 2 jump rings, which give it stability. It has a me-made toggle clasp which makes it really easy to put on and take off by oneself. It measures 7 1/2" long which should fit most wrists.

Dragonflies are awesome! They are thought to have evolved over 300 million years ago (!) and there are currently more than 5000 species on our planet. They can fly at 30 mph, and hover, lift up and down and even fly backwards! And talk about insect control...they can eat hundreds of mosquitoes in a day. And did I mention that some of them migrate? This necklace is a tribute to an incredible insect. A Sterling dragonfly rests on a boulder, next to a spread of lichen colored with vitreous enamel. It is suspended from a Sterling chain that features Sterling aquatic arrowhead plant leaves and watery swirls. The focal point piece is 1 1/2" wide by 1 1/4" tall and the total length is an adjustable 25".

Everyone loves dragonflies, and for good reason/s, but dragonfly nymphs do not get the credit that they deserve! This necklace is one small step in that direction, (small steps being their operative means of transport, those short little legs not being able to muster giant leaps). Dragonfly larvae live underwater for up to 4 years, and when the time is just right, emerge and do their final molt into the winged air-breathing adults that we know and love! When I was just finishing this necklace, I stopped by my down-the-hill river for my daily dip, and noticed what I assumed were 2 empty larval shells on an exposed rock and took them for a fun photo op. Much to my surprise, one of them had not hatched yet! Back at home, it wasted no time in doing so, in the company of the necklace that honored it. What a thrill! The necklace features a carved (not cast!) nymph, sitting on a silver stone above a lovely piece of river-blue slag (which I found in the same river!) embellished by some aquatic arrowhead plant leaves. The Sterling chain measures an adjustable 26 inches.

Pondlife Necklace

Sometimes the larval form of a creature is the one that is the most memorable, and in my opinion, this can be said of the industrious caddisfly larva. They live in their larval form for 1-2 years, collecting small twigs and pebbles which they attach to themselves as both protection and camouflage. They look like moving sticks as they roam around their aquatic stream or pond bottoms, and are a sign of clean water (yay!). This caddisfly larva pin features this star creature making its way across a river-bottom pebble, next to a Petosky stone, speaking of cool things. Did I mention that Petosky stones are fossilized coral found in the Midwest US, which used to be ocean floor?! And that I found this one in (guess where!) Lake Michigan in Petosky, Michigan, while sitting by the lake's edge as the the current brought them in? I polished and set the stone, fabricated the caddisfly larva and then brought them together in a union of eras and Sterling. The pin is 1 3/4" wide by 1 1/4" tall.

Okay, so nautilus shells may not be bioluminescent, but they are beautiful, and bioluminescence is cool, so why not combine the two? These nautilus shell earrings do indeed glow in the dark, an ability that certain sea life forms possess. They are also somewhat translucent, so seemingly glow just a bit during daylight hours, also. I make them out of Sterling silver and carefully handpaint them, sealing them with protective resin. They measure a little more than 1" high, by 3/4" wide, not including the Sterling earring wires. They are light to wear and seemingly float like a nautilus.
